Bokamoso Youth Centre Fibre Optic Training Programme

Bokamoso Youth Centre provides youth from previously disadvantaged backgrounds with various skills development trainings to empower them to become self-reliant.

From inception our purpose has always been to care for the economic and social development of the disadvantaged community members of Greater Alexandra and surrounding areas. We believe that by equipping and providing youth with economic skills whilst caring for their social needs they will grow to become self-reliant and lead sustainable lives.

What is the purpose of this programme?
The program prepares the student to be able to effectively and efficiently install, terminate, and test multimode fibre optic networks to existing standards. This course is designed for installation and maintenance staff working on a range of fibre optic networks including enterprise and outside plant networks for datacoms and telecoms applications. It provides a broad knowledge of the components and equipment used and highlights good working practices in order to inspire a professional
approach to the job role.


Who can apply?

  • Must not be in employment, education or training
  • Must be South African Citizen with Valid ID Number
  • Must have minimum Grade 12
  • SRD Grant recipients are encouraged to apply
  • Reside in Township, Informal Settlement or Hostel (TISH)


What are the requirements?

  • Languages: Must able to read and speak the English language.
  • Previous Training: Training in Bokamoso’s End User Computing Training, Entrepreneurship training and Customer Service Training.
  • Age: Must be between ages of 18-35 years.
  • Criminal Record: You must not have a criminal record of any kind or be under investigations for a crime.
  • Eye Sight: Students must be able to see, manipulate, and hold small tools and test equipment.

Particular Physical Demand(s) on student:

  • Students must possess physical strength to carry heavy items and ability to dig when installing fibre
  • Students must have the ability to announce to anyone in the classroom that lasers are about to be
  • turned on or are currently on and active.
  • Further, student must be able to hear and react to the announcement from anyone in the classroom
  • that lasers are about to be turned on or currently active.
  • Finally, students considering this or any other fibre optics course must understand that, because of
  • Safety issues in dealing high-power lasers and microscopes, the ability to communicate these important announcements to co-workers and the ability to hear and react to these announcements from co-workers is required once in the field working in this industry.

Duration of training: 3 Weeks
This introductory 15-days Fibre Optic Tech course is designed for anyone interested in becoming a Certified Fibre Optic Technician. This Fibre Optic Training combines theory and 70% hands-on activities to prepare the student to take the test that is sanctioned and given and graded the final class day. This course also introduces the student to industry standards governing and Distribution Cabling. Students will learn how to identify fibre types, recognise various connectors used in fibre installation; and install, terminate, splice, and properly test installed fibre cable to existing standards.


Method of assessing whether course objective was met:
Along with chapter tests, class discussions, and substantial hands-on activities, the exam is given and graded at the end of the class. Students will demonstrate the ability to build and test and troubleshoot a fibre optic LAN network.

Commitment fee of R250.00. This commitment fee is payable before training, it will help cover refreshments for the duration of the training. Attendance is 07:00am until 03:00pm.
